The Strange Friendship of Wolfgang Pauli / C.G. Jung Correspondance

My new book arrived this week. “The universe is made of stories not atoms” poet Muriel Rukeyser famousely remarked but some of the most fascinating and important stories are those that explain atoms and Psyche such in this case. I was so intrigued to discover this collaboration between such great scientits. It’s fascinating and difficult but very important book.  As said my favorite scientist Brian Cox:

“This shift of the configuration of the electrons inside the diamond has consequences, because the sum total of all the electrons of the universe must respect Pauli. Therefore, every electron around every atom in the universe must be shifting as I heat the diamond up, to make sure that none of them end up in the same energy level. When I heat this diamond up, all the electrons in the universe instantly but imperceptibly change their energy levels. So everything is connected to everything else.”

” I consider that the trace of my hand is the gesture in itself. The trace of my hand is sufficient to communicate the energy of the gesture. It could even become a symbol of it”. David Altmedj

” Flux” was the last exhibition of David Altmejd I saw in Mudam Luxembourg. It’s all about dislocation and fragmentation in constructions modules, mirrors and multiplied visual effects. David is attached to the idea of an universal world that is absorbed as it is reflected in this stunning representation of crystallization of time, cultures and images that we face and that engulfs us. It evokes the Library of Babel of Jorge Borges and the minimalism of Robert Irwin or Donald Judd.

Insects; animals, fruits, flowers, trees, crystals..etc are the expression of a naturalized archeology of the world were the vegetable, animal and mineral coexist. David in this fantastic exhibition shows how the energy that is contained in the flesh and in chainlets  is carried by birds and flowers in a complex associative relations that maintain our biodiversity.

” I am interested in the dualities between beauty and ugliness. I believe that an object must have the two aspects to be fascinating”. David Altmedj

“To find yourself in the infinite,
You must distinguish and then combine;
Therefore my winged song thanks
The man who distinguished cloud from cloud. ”

Translation of the highlighted text:

And what can I tell you, lovely bird,
what do you hope to hear from me?
From this cold and distant land you will not hear songs,
only lamentations, only weeping and wailing.

I ordered this book when a friend of mine went to see the last exhibition of Tauba Auerbach in New York. He thinks that she is one of the most important American artist today so I decided to take a look at her first inspiration : Beautiful Necessity by  the American architect and theosophist Claude Bragdon.

Using Bragdon’s methodology as a point of departure, Auerbach empowers projective geometry, recasting Ornament as Instrument.

I am myself as an architect very close to Adolf Loos (in his essay “Ornament and Crime“), his chief antagonist, who describes ornament as a sign of wasted time and a marker of evolutionary lag but what  I understand from reading this book is that Bragdon engaged with the argument by proposing that architects put aside historical and natural pastiche and look to geometry for a new style of decoration.

Page 110

Translation of the marked section:

“History is enough

it’s looking for mine too

to castrate, to cut off with papers pages

sharper than any knife; to crush

and to stuff my mouth forever

with what it cut off

as in the mutilation of war-dead

so that I won’t sing except in a sterile chirp

so that I will learn many languages

and no one of them mine

so that I will be scattered and dispersed.”

Y. Amichai
