“The new fascism, the consumer society, has profoundly transformed young people; it touched them in their intimacy, it gave them other feelings, other ways of thinking, of living, other cultural models. (…) Which means, ultimately, that this “civilization of consumption” is a dictatorial civilization. In short, if the word “fascism” means violence of power, the “consumer society” has indeed realized fascism. » Pasolini

No Rebbe, No Chassidim

1304 President Street, 770 Eastern Pkwy, Brooklyn, Chassidim, The Rebbe’s House

I am not a chassid, yet my mother’s family has its roots in the area that was the birthplace of Chassidus. . Chassidus seems natural to me. I feel Chassidus in my blood. Perhaps I am in hashkafa, but not in practice.

Breslov continues without a Rebbe. Lubavitch continues without a Rebbe. Can one continue without a Rebbe or the Rebbe’s chassidim?

Aldous Huxley, THE DOUBLE CHECK BUSINESSMAN

“…civilization has absolutely no need of nobility or heroism. These things are symptoms of political inefficiency. In a properly organized society like ours, nobody has any opportunities for being noble or heroic. Conditions have got to be thoroughly unstable before the occasion can arise. Where there are wars, where there are divided allegiances, where there are temptations to be resisted, objects of love to be fought for or defended—there, obviously, nobility and heroism have some sense. But there aren’t any wars nowadays. The greatest care is taken to prevent you from loving any one too much. There’s no such thing as a divided allegiance; you’re so conditioned that you can’t help doing what you ought to do. And what you ought to do is on the whole so pleasant, so many of the natural impulses are allowed free play, that there really aren’t any temptations to resist.” Aldous Huxley

Our intellect is vain when they draw near

Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy ,Canto X

« Nous voyons, comme ceux qui n’ont pas de bons yeux »,

dit-il, « les choses qui sont lointaines ;

Dante Alighieri, La Divine Comédie, Chant X, L’Enfer

It’s not the sea

kayak rapids, sea, sea tide

If it’s not the sea, it’s her image,
her figure, upside down, in the sky.

If it’s not the sea, it’s her voice
thin, Across the vast world,
amplified by the wind.

If it’s not the sea, it’s her name
In a tongue without lips,
out of place,
no other word than this:
big

If it’s not the sea, it’s her idea
of fire, impenetrable, pure;
and i,
burning i drown in her.
