Flying over Rocky Mountains

Rocky Mountains

Flying over the Rocky mountains with a small plane can be intimidating. The mountains are enormous towers of solid rocks, fortunately, it’s possible to cross it over terrain as low as 6000 ft. VFR routes are the fasted way to cross without actually flying over any mountains. This gives you a sense of security knowing that if you have mechanical issues, there is a chance of making a successful landing on the road or valley below, and being rescued quickly.

Flying direct will take some time off of your trip.  If you haven’t flown through the mountains yet, don’t bother going direct.  The half hour of flying time you save to get to the destination will not make up for the entire time you are worrying about your engine quitting and the jagged rocks below.  If you have a Ballistic Chute installed, this worry will not be as high, but survival in the middle of nowhere is still a concern if something does actually go wrong. Engines have been known to fail, no matter how much it cost or who built it.

“Oh, how one wishes sometimes to escape from the meaningless dullness of human eloquence, from all those sublime phrases, to take refuge in nature, apparently so inarticulate, or in the wordlessness of long, grinding labor, of sound sleep, of true music, or of a human understanding rendered speechless by emotion”

Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago.

“Only so does Revelation. Shine in the time that rejected you. Only your nothingness is the experience. It is entitled to have of you.”

Gershom Scholem

Humanity lends itself in the Plato cave, continuing to enjoy, out of centuries-old habit, simple images of the truth but being educated by photographs is not like having been educated by older and more handcrafted images: today there are much more numerous images that require our attention; inventory began in 1839 and since then almost everything has been photographed, or at least so it seems; this insatiability of the photographic eye changes the conditions of captivity in that cave that is our world; teaching us a new visual code, photographs alter and expand our notions of what is worth watching and what we have the right to observe; the greatest consequence of photography is that it gives us the feeling that we can have the whole world in our head, like anthology of images…

I realize that the past has not disappeared , it is precisely etched in eternity.  I feel it more and more, as if it was  god himself who was moved by our memories, as if they were engraved in his depth like the most precious thing. The past is the only thing we can know. Every second of the present is already in the past. You don’t know the present, you can only be attentive, but everything that is happening before your eyes has already happened. The future simply does not exist. It is only this eternal tale, the past that demands your attention. It makes me remember Dante saying :

«Noi veggiam, come quei c’ha mala luce, le cose», disse, «che ne son lontano; cotanto ancor ne splende il sommo duce. 102 Quando s’appressano o son, tutto è vano nostro intelletto; e s’altri non ci apporta, nulla sapem di vostro stato umano. 105 Però comprender puoi che tutta morta fia nostra conoscenza da quel punto che del futuro fia chiusa la porta». ////

“We see, like those with faulty vision,
things at a distance, he replied. That much,
for us, the mighty Ruler’s light still shines.
‘When things draw near or happen now,
our minds are useless. Without the words of others
we can know nothing of your human state.
Thus it follows that all our knowledge
will perish at the very moment
the portals of the future close.”

Threshold geography

Aleph, G.Perc, geography

This is how space begins, with words only, signs traced on the blank page. To describe space: to name it, to trace it, like those portolano-makers who saturated the coastlines with the names of harbours, the names of capes, the names of inlets, until in the end the land was only separated from the sea by a continuous ribbon of text. Is the aleph, that place in Borges from which the entire world is visible simultaneously, anything other than an alphabet?” G.Perec.

“And with these, the sense of the world’s concreteness, irreducible, immediate, tangible, of something clear and closer to us: of the world, no longer as a journey having constantly to be remade, not as a race without end, a challenge having constantly to be met, not as the one pretext for a despairing acquisitiveness, nor as the illusion of a conquest, but as the rediscovery of a meaning, the perceiving that the earth is a form of writing, a geography of which we had forgotten that we ourselves are the authors”

Throw this land, one at the other, But the land always falls back to the land

Hebrew writing and Arabic writing go from east to west,
Latin writing, from west to east.
Languages are like cats:
You must not stroke their hair the wrong way.
The clouds come from the sea, the hot wind from the desert,
The trees bend in the wind,
And stones fly from all four winds,
Into all four winds. They throw stones,
Throw this land, one at the other,
But the land always falls back to the land.
They throw the land, want to get rid of it.
Its stones, its soil, but you can’t get rid of it.
They throw stones, throw stones at me
In 1936, 1938, 1948, 1988,
Semites throw at Semites and anti-Semites at anti-Semites,
Evil men throw and just men throw,
Sinners throw and tempters throw,
Geologists throw and theologists throw,
Archaelogists throw and archhooligans throw,
Kidneys throw stones and gall bladders throw,
Head stones and forehead stones and the heart of a stone,
Stones shaped like a screaming mouth
And stones fitting your eyes
Like a pair of glasses,
The past throws stones at the future,
And all of them fall on the present.
Weeping stones and laughing gravel stones,
Even God in the Bible threw stones,
Even the Urim and Tumim were thrown
And got stuck in the beastplate of justice,
And Herod threw stones and what came out was a Temple.

Oh, the poem of stone sadness
Oh, the poem thrown on the stones
Oh, the poem of thrown stones.
Is there in this land
A stone that was never thrown
And never built and never overturned
And never uncovered and never discovered
And never screamed from a wall and never discarded by the builders
And never closed on top of a grave and never lay under lovers
And never turned into a cornerstone?

Please do not throw any more stones,
You are moving the land,
The holy, whole, open land,
You are moving it to the sea
And the sea doesn’t want it
The sea says, not in me.

Please throw little stones,
Throw snail fossils, throw gravel,
Justice or injustice from the quarries of Migdal Tsedek,
Throw soft stones, throw sweet clods,
Throw limestone, throw clay,
Throw sand of the seashore,
Throw dust of the desert, throw rust,
Throw soil, throw wind,
Throw air, throw nothing
Until your hands are weary
And the war is weary
And even peace will be weary and will be.

Yehuda Amichai

“To get caught in the wheels. Of the “Had Gadya” machine”

An Arab shepherd is searching for his goat on Mount Zion
And on the opposite hill I am searching for my little boy.
An Arab shepherd and a Jewish father
Both in their temporary failure.
Our two voices met above
The Sultan’s Pool in the valley between us.
Neither of us wants the boy or the goat
To get caught in the wheels
Of the “Had Gadya” machine.

Afterward we found them among the bushes,
And our voices came back inside us
Laughing and crying.

Searching for a goat or for a child has always been
The beginning of a new religion in these mountains.

 Amichai Yéhuda.

Waco UPF-7

969047_10200233922077862_130629055_n

The Waco UPF-7 is an unusual airplane. This is not due to any outstanding technical features but to timing. A relatively obsolete design, it was built in quantity at a time when the open cockpit biplane trainer for civilian use was virtually extinct.

Even then, it slipped into service unnoticed since it had no significant new features to arouse the interest of the contemporary aviation press.

Production of commercial biplane trainers virtually ended in Depression years of the early 1930s, and new low-powered monoplanes rapidly took their place in the schools and in private aviation. Only the Army and Navy were principal customers for biplane trainers in succeeding years. While Waco did not have a share of this market, it was one of the few firms that continued to supply open cockpit biplanes to private owners of the mid-1930s, a group comprising what could be considered a custom trade. Yet the UPF-7, introduced in the late twilight of the biplane era, was built in greater quantity than any single Waco model that preceded it. Approximately 600 came out of the Troy, Ohio factory between 1937 and 1942.

Today there are more than 150 registered and I flew one on them in 2013. The smell of the exaust, the wind blowing on my face and the sound of the engine whirling, reminded me the good days when instruments were not digital.
