Cactus don’t need to be watered. They survive in the desert. Who wants to be a cactus ?
There is psychological versus physical presence. I think the pyschological is more important. For decades, one of my friend was physically present, but psychologically and emotionally absent from my life. Once I acknowledged the absence and removed her psychologically as well, the more at peace I became.
You’re not a cactus. You are more like an Indian summer. If you feel like a cactus, I can tell you you have their geometric elegance, the splendid shock of their rare blossoms and their quiet resilience. The child in you who also had to learn to thrive on being underwatered, the child longing for thick-skinned spiny armor to protect the inner succulence from the intemperate climate and violent dust-storms of its local environment.

For us Mexicans, the cactus is like a magical plant that, even with thorns, keeps that water and food in that infinite desert, the Cactus, despite everything, is the hope of life.
