Hypernormalisation = Word invented Alexei Yurchak. Pretending is accepted as normal and the fake reality as real.
“When reason, common sense, and decency are assaulted often enough, then personality is crippled, and human intelligence disintegrates or is warped. The barrier between truth and lies is effectively destroyed Schooled in such a climate, fearful and deprived of any intellectual initiative, Homo Sovieticus could never be more than a mouthpiece for the party’s ideas and slogans, not so much a human being then, as a receptacle to be emptied and filled as party policy dictated.” (Ellis 1998, 208)
You quoted the horrible and stereotypical statement from Ellis on “homo sovieticus” as an illustration of my “hypernormalization” theory. In fact, I quoted him in my this guyin my book as an illustration of everything wrong with Sovietology. My book critiques Ellis and this view, instead of using it as an illustration. Hypernomalization is is an attempt to provide a very different and more subtle argument than this silly model of a homo sovieticus who is supposedly unable to think fir him/herself. Perhaps you should read my book first, before trying to wrongly explain its ideas.
Best regards – Alexei Yurchak
