No Rebbe, No Chassidim

1304 President Street, 770 Eastern Pkwy, Brooklyn, Chassidim, The Rebbe’s House

I am not a chassid, yet my mother’s family has its roots in the area that was the birthplace of Chassidus. . Chassidus seems natural to me. I feel Chassidus in my blood. Perhaps I am in hashkafa, but not in practice.

Breslov continues without a Rebbe. Lubavitch continues without a Rebbe. Can one continue without a Rebbe or the Rebbe’s chassidim?

Neither bow down or prostrate

Esther, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Purim, Star Wars

“All the king’s servants who were in the king’s gate would kneel and prostrate themselves before Haman, for so had the king commanded concerning him, but Mordechai would neither kneel nor prostrate himself” Esther 3:2

“But man seeks to bow before that only which is recognized by the greater majority, if not by all his fellowmen, as having a right to be worshipped; whose rights are so unquestionable that men agree unanimously to bow down to it. For the chief concern of these miserable creatures is not to find and worship the idol of their own choice, but to discover that which all others will believe in, and consent to bow down to in a mass. It is that instinctive need of having a worship in common that is the chief suffering of every man, the chief concern of mankind from the beginning of times. It is for that universality of religious worship that people destroyed each other by sword. Creating gods unto themselves, they forthwith began appealing to each other: “Abandon your deities, come and bow down to ours, or death to ye and your idols!” And so will they do till the end of this world; they will do so even then, when all the gods themselves have disappeared, for then men will prostrate themselves before and worship some idea.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky

“For us survivors
it’s a miracle every day
if we love, we love strongly
as if our loved one
could disappear at any moment
and us too”

“Alone I cannot lift my voice in song—Then you come near and sing with me. Our prayers fuse, and a new voice soars. Our bond is beyond voice and voice. Our bond is one of spirit and spirit.”

Rebbe Pinchas Of Koretz

hannukah 2021, Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, tachlis, תכלס

Like a bird, man can reach undreamed-of heights as long as he works his wings. Should he relax them for but one minute, however, he plummets downward.

(Rabbi Yisrael Salanter)

חיים שאל ממך נתתה לו
Life he requested of You, You gave it to him. (Tehillim 21:5)

Hashem, I am asking for life from You – but not the life of an animal who merely exists to fulfill its bodily desires. I am asking for a life in which each day I can work to fulfill the tachlis of why You put me here in this world.

index

Edward Bernstein said :”Die bevegung ist alles, das ziel ist nichts “ = The movement is everything, the goal is nothing. The goal was obviously a socialist society. By calling it “nothing” he didn’t mean to dismiss it. Not at all ! He simply wanted to emphasize the improbability of its attainment. Every attempt to found an egalitarian society has failed without exception. But the movement, the struggle toward that society remains.

Leibowitz Yeshayahu
